The panel

The panel

Every way to interact with a tile in the Overflow panel, mouse and keyboard, plus what the two buttons in the panel's corner do.

Left-click

Left-clicking a tile activates that item the same way clicking it directly in the menu bar would: its real menu opens for menu-based apps, or its popover/window opens for popover-based apps.

Right-click

Right-clicking a tile sends the item's context action instead of its primary action, for apps that distinguish between the two (for example, an app that opens a quick toggle on left-click but a fuller menu on right-click).

Keyboard navigation

The panel is fully operable without a mouse once it's open:

KeyAction
Left / Right arrowMove focus between tiles.
Return or SpaceActivate the focused tile — same as a left-click.
Control+Return or Shift+ReturnSend the context action for the focused tile — same as a right-click.
EscapeClose the panel.

The orange flash

If a tile briefly flashes orange after you click it, that item couldn't be activated directly through accessibility — Overflow opened its app instead as a fallback, so you still reach it, just one step removed from a native menu mirror. This is expected behavior for a subset of apps; see Troubleshooting if it happens for an app you'd expect to mirror natively.

Settings and quit buttons

The panel's corner has two icon buttons:

  • Gear — opens Overflow's Settings window (Launch at Login, Scan Interval, the global hotkey, and permission status).
  • Power — quits Overflow. Use this, then relaunch from Applications, for a full restart.
